Joseph Damian Schmitt (born April 22, 1858 in Marbach near Fulda; † April 10, 1939 in Fulda ) was Bishop of Fulda from 1907 to 1939 .

Life

After graduating from high school in Fulda in 1876, he studied theology and philosophy in Würzburg and at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe in Rome and graduated in 1882 with a doctorate. He was ordained a priest on October 28, 1882 . First he was chaplain in Belgium and then from 1887 to 1889 city chaplain in Fulda. In the fall of 1889, Bishop Joseph Weyland appointed him professor of philosophy at the Fulda seminary . There he was first sub- rain in 1895 and rain of the seminary in the same year . From 1898 to 1907 he was professor for philosophy and theology at the theological faculty in Fulda , he lectured New Testament exegesis , liturgy , homiletics and catechetics . In 1899 he was appointed to the Fulda Cathedral Chapter. He was elected Bishop of Fulda on December 29, 1906 and confirmed by Pope Pius X on February 23, 1907. On March 19, 1907, he received the episcopal ordination from Dominikus Willi , the Bishop of Limburg . Co- consecrators were Paul Wilhelm Keppler , the Bishop of Rottenburg and Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein , the Bishop of Mainz .

Pope Pius XI appointed him in 1928 as papal assistant to the throne .

The emblem of the emblem shows a black cross in field 1 in silver / white, the emblem of the diocese of Fulda ( Fürabbey of Fulda ). In field 2 in blue a red heart with a gold cross in a silver halo with red flames, the heart is covered with a green wreath of thorns (thorn-crowned Heart of Jesus). In field 3 in red the golden spine of an open book, which is pierced by a sword at an angle to the left, the sword is silver with a golden hilt. In field 4 in silver / white a black sloping bar covered with three six-pointed silver stars.

Behind the shield is the bishop's cross, above it the green galero (bishop's hat ) with the six green tassels (fiocchi) hanging down.

His motto Gratiae et veritati ( Of grace and truth) from the Gospel of John ( Joh 1,14  EU ).

Honors

  • 1932 honorary citizen of the city of Fulda
  • Joseph-Damian-Schmitt-Strasse in Petersberg is named after him.
