Lewis Stone (1916)

Lewis Shepard Stone (born November 15, 1879 in Worcester , Massachusetts - † September 12, 1953 in Beverly Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor, who, among other things, by his portrayal as the father of Mickey Rooney in the Andy- Hardy series became popular.

Life

Stone was born in Massachusetts to Bertrand Stone and Philena Heald Ball and took part in the Spanish-American War as a soldier in 1898 . Stone was first seen on Broadway in 1912 in The Bird of Paradise . In the following years he appeared in other plays on Broadway.

From the 1920s, Lewis Stone, who previously worked exclusively as a theater actor, was seen in numerous films, including in 1922 in a double role in The Prisoner of Zenda and in 1923 in Scaramouche , each alongside the screen couple Ramón Novarro and Alice Terry . In 1952 he repeated his roles in the remakes of both films with Stewart Granger . From 1924 Stone was under a studio contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , which ran with numerous extensions until his death. He is therefore in the Guinness Book Of World Records as an actor with the longest studio contract. Loan-outs to other studios only occasionally occurred , including for his role as a scientist in the adventure film The Lost World and in 1928 for Paramount Pictures , where Lewis starred alongside Emil Jannings in Der Patriot , directed by Ernst Lubitsch . For his portrayal of Count von der Pahlen , Stone received a nomination for the Oscar for best leading actor at the 1930 Academy Awards (April) .

Stone managed to switch from silent to sound films without any problems. From the mid-1920s, Stone was mostly seen as a dignified figure of authority, as an elderly advisor and fatherly friend of the lead actor or as an avid admirer of the leading lady . Between 1937 and 1946, the white-haired character actor played Mickey Rooney's father in 16 films in the Andy Hardy series . His film character of the judge Hardy was originally played by Lionel Barrymore in A Family Affair , before the studio made numerous reshuffles and Stone was used. Stone also became known for his seven appearances at the side of Greta Garbo , including in A Shameless Woman , Wild Orchids , Romance and Queen Christine .

After having made more than 200 films, Lewis Stone died of a heart attack in 1953 while chasing teenagers off his property. The actor was married three times. His first marriage to Florence Oakley, which had two children, was divorced and he married Margaret Langham in 1907. After her death, he married Hazel Elizabeth Wolf, with whom he stayed until his death. His grave is in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla , New York .
