action

Annie Oakley makes a living from shooting birds and then selling them. After selling several to a hotel owner, the hotel owner suggests that she enter a shooting competition organized by Buffalo Bill . Then she meets Frank Buttler, against whom she will compete in the competition. When Annie Oakley wins the head-to-head race against Frank Buttler, Buffalo Bill suggests that she attend his show. Although Frank Buttler and Annie Oakley are in love, he switches to Pawnee Bill's Show for fear of forever being overshadowed by his lover. Sitting Bull adopts Annie Oakley and helps her fund a European tour. When it turns out that they can collect medals in Europe, but earn nothing, they return to America. Both Pawnee and Buffalo are broke and therefore want to merge. After Annie deliberately lost to Frank Buttler, nothing stands in the way of the merger.

background

Originally, Busby Berkeley was supposed to direct and Judy Garland to play Annie Oakley. After an accident while filming on April 5, 1949, Howard Keel broke his ankle and could not walk for three months. On May 3, Busby Berkeley was fired by Arthur Freed because his attitudes were more like stage numbers than a Wild West show. So far, the cast had recorded all of the songs and filmed the numbers “Doin 'What Comes Natu'lly”, “I'm an Indian Too” and several smaller scenes. The following day, director Charles Walters suggested taking over the film. Due to her nervous breakdown , Garland could no longer work, whereupon she was released without notice on May 10, 1949. On June 21, 1949, Betty Hutton was loaned out by Paramount Studios for the title role, after which Sidney and Sheldon deleted several dance numbers from the script and added new dialogue. In addition, Louis B. Mayer hired George Sidney as a director, which Walters only found out when it was in the paper.

On October 10th, recording began with the new line-up. So far the film had cost $ 1,877,528 . Frank Morgan , who was to play the role of Buffalo Bill , died unexpectedly on September 18 at the age of 59 of a heart attack , after which he had to be replaced by Louis Calhern . Filming ended on December 16 for a total of $ 3,768,785. When the film was released on May 23, 1950, it grossed over $ 8 million for MGM studios .

criticism

"Film version of the classic musical by Irving Berlin, whose popular, funny songs [...] cannot quite compensate for the shortcomings in direction and performance."

Awards

At the Academy Awards in 1951, the film received four Oscar nominations in the categories “ Best Film Music ”, “ Best Production Design ”, “ Best Camera (Color) ” and “ Best Editing ”. It won in the category “Best Film Music”.

Betty Hutton was also nominated for "Best Actress in a Comedy / Musical" at the Golden Globes .
