Thomas "Tom" F. Held (born August 31, 1889 in Vienna , Austria ; † March 13, 1962 in Hollywood , California ) was an Austrian-born American film editor who was twice nominated for the Oscar for best editing .

Life

Held, who immigrated to the USA from Austria around 1896 , began his career in the Hollywood film industry in 1920 as an assistant director on the silent drama The River's End directed by Victor Heerman and Marshall Neilan . His first job as a film editor was the musical film They Learned About Women (1930) directed by Jack Conway and Sam Wood , starring Joe Schenck , Gus Van and Bessie Love .

At the Academy Awards in 1939 , Held was nominated twice for the Oscar for the best editing : On the one hand for the biopic The Great Waltz (The Great Waltz, 1938) directed by Julien Duvivier , and on the other hand for the adventure film Der Testpilot (Test Pilot, 1938 ) by Victor Fleming . The two films were his last work as an editor. He worked again in 1939 as a second assistant editor on the musical film The Wizard of Oz (The Wizard of Oz, 1939).
