action
The chimpanzee Cheetah brings a cigarette box with the inscription "Gloria" and the year 1928 to Tarzan and Jane. With her chimpanzee friend, she goes back to the site. It's an airplane wreck with human bones lying on it. When Cheetah returns home, this time she has a diary with her. Inquisitive Jane finds out that the book was written by aviation pioneer Gloria James, who has been missing since her circumnavigation of the world 20 years ago. Jane asks Tarzan to send the book to England, but Tarzan refuses, which surprised Jane very much. When she sleeps, Tarzan goes to the river dock with the book and shows it to the trader Trask and the pilot Dodd. The two tell Tarzan that an Englishman named Douglas Jessup is looking for Gloria because she is the only person who can solve a murder for which he had been in prison for 20 years.
Tarzan is distraught and goes to a hidden mountain village. He is the only person who knows about the village. He tells the leader of the tribe that lives there about Jessup. Tarzan also knows that Gloria lives in the village and asks if she wants to go back to England. The tribal leader agrees, Tarzan leaves the village with Gloria. Some of the residents suspect that their calm is over. Tarzan comes to the tree house with Gloria. Jane is fascinated by Gloria's youthful charisma. When Dodd and Trask see the aviator, they remember a legend about a hidden city that is said to have a fountain of youth. Although Trask doesn't believe in the legend, he hires the seedy Vredak to look for the city. Vredak moves to the mountains with a group of men. When he arrives in the valley, he is hit by a flame arrow. After Vredak's men fled, Pasco, the leader of the suspicious residents, demands Tarzan's death.
After a while, Tarzan and Jane receive a letter from Gloria. She married Jessup and wants to return to Africa with him. Dodd hears the news and plans to follow Trask, Tarzan and Gloria to the hidden city. Shortly before Gloria and Jessup arrive, Tarzan is murdered. Jane is shocked that Gloria now looks her age after all. Jane suggests that Gloria and her husband be taken to the Fountain of Youth in the Hidden City. Tarzan refuses, but Jane offers to take his place as a guide. Trask and Dodd want to accompany the group part of the way to allegedly get a spare part for Dodd's plane.
Tarzan follows the group unnoticed. When the group is surprised by floods in a ravine, Tarzan has to intervene. Tarzan tells Jane and her group to return. Then he sneaks away with Gloria and Jessup. Trask blackmails Jane to lead him and Dodd to the valley, otherwise he would kill Cheetah. Meanwhile, Tarzan leads Gloria and Jessup in front of the tribal leader, who invites the two newlyweds to take a sip from the fountain of youth. Tarzan, about to leave the valley, is captured by Pasco's men. His eyes are supposed to be burned out so that he cannot reveal the location of the city. Tarzan escapes and meets Jane, Trask and Dodd who are just reaching the entrance to the valley. Pasco lets the group attack, Trask and Dodd are killed. Cheetah triggers a landslide that allows Tarzan and Jane to escape the incendiary arrows. Returning, Cheetah drinks from a stolen vial and quickly transforms into a baby chimpanzee.
background
Lex Barker portrayed Tarzan for the first time in this film, making him the successor to the popular Johnny Weissmüller . Barker, later very popular in Europe due to various Karl May films, was the tenth official actor of the famous jungle hero. Brenda Joyce plays Tarzan's companion Jane for the fifth and final time. Besides Karla Schramm, she is the only actress who played Jane at the side of two different Tarzan actors. The actor who played the first film tarzan, Elmo Lincoln , has a cameo as a fisherman.
Director Lee Sholem made his directorial debut with this film, while it was the last film work for co-writer Harry Chandlee . His author partner Curt Siodmak , like actor Henry Brandon, was born German. Cinematographer Karl Struss had won the first ever camera Oscar in 1929, while sound engineer Franklin Hansen had received an award in 1934.
