action
Tarzan saves a young woman from predators. During the rescue, she falls into the water of a river from which the chimpanzee Cheetah fishes a bracelet of the woman. The woman's name is Athena and she comes from Palmyra, a hidden city in the mountains that is only inhabited by women. Tarzan brings Athena, whose ankle is injured, back to her town. His adopted son Boy, whom he sent back, still follows them. The queen of the city is grateful to Tarzan for the rescue. She reminds him that all other intruders will be killed.
Shortly after the incident, Jane returns to the jungle from England. She is accompanied by Sir Guy Henderson, an archaeologist who is planning an expedition with his partners Anders and Brenner. Arrived at the post office, which is run by Ballister, Jane is greeted by Cheetah, who gives her the bracelet. Brenner recognizes from the embossing that the bracelet comes from Palmyra and wants to question Tarzan. He feels harassed and leaves the post office with Jane. Ballister now tells Brenner stories about the Amazon city, in which there is supposed to be gold. Ballister convinces Brenner to look for the city, only Henderson is against it. It is decided to hire Tarzan as a guide. But when Ballister shoots a helpless mother lion, Tarzan refuses. Henderson now wants to lead the expedition north and says goodbye to Tarzan, Jane and Boy. Boy is angry about the departure of Henderson, with whom he became friends, because he is fascinated by the archaeological tools.
When Tarzan is alone on the hunt, Boy follows the expedition. He offers himself as a guide to Palmyra. Jane notices the Boy's disappearance and looks for him. A storm comes up, a tree is uprooted and buries Jane under itself. Meanwhile the expedition has reached Palmyra. The queen sentenced the intruders to death. The men assure her of their good intentions, the queen overturns the death sentence and turns the men into slave labor.
Tarzan returns from the hunt and finds Jane under the fallen tree. He sets them free. At the same time, Boy assigns Cheetah to find Athena in the hope that she can help the expedition escape. Athena agrees and lets the men out of their prison. The greedy ballister wants to plunder the city's temple before fleeing. When Henderson turns against him, he is killed by Ballister. Athena tries to flee from the men, but Ballister throws a knife in her back. Before she dies, she can sound the alarm. When the women attack with bows and arrows, Cheetah flees to get Tarzan. Anders and Ballister are able to escape the fight and blow up a passport to keep the women from pursuing.
The Queen takes Boy prisoner and sentences him to death. Tarzan, called for help by Cheetah, meets Anders and Ballister, who are carrying the stolen treasure with them. He lures them into quicksand and takes the gold from them. He crosses the pass on a log and enters Palmyra. Tarzan hands over the stolen treasure and takes Boy back home with him.
background
In the ninth Tarzan adventure with Johnny Weissmüller, Brenda Joyce made her debut as Jane, replacing Maureen O'Sullivan . Joyce played this role a total of five times, four times at Weissmüller's side. Born in Russia, Maria Ouspenskaya only appeared in three other films until her death in 1949.
In contrast to his predecessor Wilhelm Thiele , who directed the two previous Tarzan films, Kurt Neumann was not a Nazi refugee; he came to the USA at the beginning of the talkie. Born in Nuremberg, he became known as the director of the horror film Die Fliege . Cinematographer Archie Stout was supposed to win an Oscar in 1953. Co-author Marjorie L. Pfaelzer was the daughter of producer Sol Lesser.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films described the film as a “standard adventure in the manner of a series, which at most arouses emotions by including the little boy”.
