The Estadio Alberto Gallardo is a football stadium in the Peruvian capital Lima . It has space for 18,000 spectators and is the home of the Sporting Cristal club . In the absence of a suitable venue, the CD Universidad San Martín de Porres also uses the stadium. In 2012 the stadium was named after the football player Alberto Gallardo, who died in 2001 . As a player for Sporting Cristal, Gallardo was the top scorer of the first Peruvian soccer league in 1961 and 1962 .
history
The then Estadio San Martín de Porres was built in 1960. At that time it was used almost exclusively by the Club Deportivo Universidad San Martín de Porres , more precisely by its predecessor club. Today's user Sporting Cristal only allowed his second team to play in this stadium, as it was a lot smaller at the time than it is today. It was not until 1995 that Sporting Cristal and his first team moved to the Estadio San Martín de Porres and renovated it so that the audience capacity of 18,000 that is still in force today was achieved. Only for the games against the rivals Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima will the club move to the Estadio Nacional at short notice , as more security can be guaranteed there. In the very first game at the Estadio San Martín de Porres, Sporting Cristal managed a 6-0 win over Club Sportivo Cienciano . In total, Cristal has won the Peruvian championship fifteen times to date, three times in this stadium.
Club Sporting Cristal is planning a new stadium and is looking for a location for the new venue. The plans for the facility provide for 23,000 places. 25 million US dollars are earmarked for the new building .
