The 1961/62 season was the 16th season of the Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . The Soviet championship title was secured for the first time ever by Spartak Moscow , while the two city neighbors Kirovets Leningrad and LIISchT Leningrad were relegated to the second division.

The 20 teams of Class A played in return matches against each opponent, making the total number of games per team 38. Champion was the team with the best points, while the last two were relegated to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
