The Estadio Santa Laura is a football stadium in the Chilean capital Santiago . It has space for 22,000 spectators and serves as the home stadium for Unión Española .

The stadium in 2007

The Estadio Santa Laura was built between 1922 and 1923. After more than a year of construction, it was opened on November 12, 1923 with the game Unión Española against Audax Italiano . The first league game in the new stadium took place in 1933, ten years after the arena was completed, between Audax Italiano and Morning Star. Since the opening of the Estadio Santa Laura, the Unión Española club from Santiago de Chile has been hosting its home games here, although the stadium has meanwhile also hosted the home games of other Chilean teams, such as Audax Italiano in the 1930s.

The old Estadio Santa Laura was demolished in 2005 and replaced by a new one, because a shopping chain wanted to build a hall at the place where the old stadium was located. The new stadium was modernized in 2009 and currently has a seating capacity of 22,000.

The Estadio Santa Laura has also served as a venue for concerts for some musicians. In 1997 part of the lighting and sound system collapsed at a Deep Purple concert , injuring 44 people.
