Career

Club career

Norberto Scoponi, born in 1961 in Rosario , the third largest city in Argentina , began playing football in the youth department of the local club Newell's Old Boys , where he was finally accepted into the first team in 1982 at the age of 21. In the following twelve years until 1994, the goalkeeper played for the Newell's Old Boys, and with great success. For the first time in 1987/88 they won the Argentine football championship when they took first place in the Primera División with six points ahead of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro . In the same year, coach José Yudica's team reached the final in the Copa Libertadores , the most important football competition for club teams in South America. There they failed, however, despite a 1-0 first leg victory after a 3-0 after extra time against the Uruguayan representative Nacional Montevideo . Norberto Scoponi was in the goal of Newell's Old Boys in both finals, as well as four years later in the club's second and to this day last Libertadores final. The team now trained by club legend Marcelo Bielsa around players like Mauricio Pochettino , Gerardo Martino or Scoponi prevailed in the semifinals against América de Cali on penalties, but also missed winning the title a few weeks later. After beating São Paulo FC 1-0 in the first leg at home at Estadio Gigante de Arroyito , the Brazilians also won 1-0 in the second leg, but the result was still there after extra time. In the penalty shoot-out that followed, São Paulo showed the better nerve and won 3-2. Before that, however, Norberto Scoponi had won two other Argentine championship titles with the Newell's Old Boys. In the 1990/91 season they won the championship final against the Boca Juniors 3-1 on penalties, while after switching to Apertura / Clausura in 1992, the Clausura championship was victorious. There they finished two points ahead of CA Vélez Sársfield on top of the table.

Norberto Scoponi stayed with the Newell's Old Boys until 1994 and made a total of 380 league games for the club. Then he joined the Mexican first division club CD Cruz Azul at the age of 33 , made 66 league games in two years and left Mexico for the 1998 season to return to his home in Argentina. After three seasons for Independiente Avellaneda and 27 appearances in the Primera División, Norberto Scoponi ended his footballing career at the age of 39.

National team

Without ever having played an international game for the national team of his home country , national coach Alfio Basile nominated the goalkeeper of Newell's Old Boys for the 1994 World Cup in the United States . At the tournament, however, Scoponi was only third choice behind Sergio Goycochea and Luis Islas and was not used. The Argentine team, however, as the reigning vice world champion, was eliminated in the round of 16 against the outsider from Romania , after having survived the preliminary round with only major problems.
