In his youth, the defender played for the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon . In 1998, at the age of 20, he moved to the Swiss second division club FC Baden , where he made his first appearances in the men's division. After Ulm's immediate relegation, Marques went to Hertha BSC . After he was only used once in the UEFA Cup in the first half of the season, he was on loan for six months to VfB Stuttgart , which signed him permanently in the summer of 2001. In the 2004/05 season Marques was under contract with the Portuguese first division club Marítimo Funchal . He then spent the last five years of his career in England, where he played for Leeds United and briefly on loan for Hull City in the second and third division .
National team
Marques made 18 appearances for the Angolan national team between 2006 and 2010. With Angola he took part in a soccer world championship for the first time in 2006, which was the greatest success in the soccer history of the African country. Due to his many years of service in European top leagues, he was considered the player with the greatest international experience in his team .
