The plant has also been producing helicopters since 1951, initially the Mil Mi-1 , and from 1965 also the Mi-8 , which is now the most widespread helicopter in the world.
On the 60th anniversary of the USSR "Казанского вертолетного производственного объединения имени 60-летия СССР" / transcription Kasanskowo wertoljotnowo proiswodstwennowo objedinjenija imeni the work was named 60-letija SSSR (dt .: Kazan Helicopter Production Association named 60 years USSR ).
In 1993 the plant was privatized and converted into a joint-stock company called Kasanski Wertoljotni zavod , which became the full legal successor of the company. In order to take the step from a pure producer to a developer of helicopters, a helicopter design office was subsequently attached to the plant.
