In his youth, the defender played for the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon . In 1998, at the age of 20, he moved to the Swiss second division club FC Baden , where he made his first appearances in the men's division. From 1999 he played for five years in the German Bundesliga, initially with the newly promoted SSV Ulm , where he quickly became a regular under coach Martin Andermatt , who had already trained him in Baden. After Ulm's immediate relegation, Marques went to Hertha BSC . After he was only used once in the UEFA Cup in the first half of the season, he was on loan for six months to VfB Stuttgart , which signed him permanently in the summer of 2001. In the 2004/05 season Marques was under contract with the Portuguese first division club Marítimo Funchal . He then spent the last five years of his career in England, where he played for Leeds United and briefly on loan for Hull City in the second and third division .
