Copa Catalunya
The Copa Catalunya (in German: Catalan Cup) is an official football club competition organized by the Federació Catalana de Futbol , the Catalan football association. The cup was first played in 1984 as the Copa Generalitat , but without the participation of professional clubs. The competition was not officially recognized until 1989, it was given its current name in 1993 and professional teams took part for the first time.
history
After the abolition of the Campionat de Catalunya (in German: Catalan Championship) under the Franco regime in 1940, a follow-up competition was not set up until 1984. Initially, the tournament was not recognized by the Spanish federation, so only clubs from the Tercera División participated. In the 1989/90 season, the Copa Generalitat was again run by the Catalan Football Association and thus officially recognized. From 1991, the two big Catalan clubs FC Barcelona and Espanyol Barcelona also took part in the Copa, as all Catalan professional clubs were allowed to participate. Since 1993 the competition has been called Copa Catalunya . Meanwhile, the importance of the Copa Catalunya is increasing again thanks to the great media interest in Catalonia and the participation of the top clubs in the region. However, the two big clubs from Barcelona usually only present a better B-team for this tournament.
Game system
All Catalan clubs from the Primera División , Segunda División , Segunda División B and Tercera División , the top four Spanish leagues, now take part in the Copa Catalunya . In addition, the respective champions of the lower leagues "Primera Catalana", "Preferente Territorial" and "Primera Territorial" are allowed to play. Only the second representatives of the clubs are excluded from participation.
The Copa Catalunya is played in a knockout system. In each case the higher-class team must compete away from the opponent. The two “big ones” - Espanyol Barcelona and FC Barcelona - first have to enter the tournament in the semi-finals. The final takes place in a neutral place and is decided in a single game.
