The Nou Estadi de Tarragona is the municipal football stadium in the Spanish city of Tarragona . Tarragona is the capital of the province of the same name in the south of the autonomous region of Catalonia . The soccer team of the Gimnàstic de Tarragona plays its home games in the sports facility.
history
The venue was inaugurated on February 2, 1972 and currently holds 14,591 spectators. The stadium with the covered, two-story main grandstand is located on the outskirts of Tarragona. The facility is fully equipped with seats that are alternately red and white in blocks.
Up until the 2005/06 season, the arena offered 12,000 seats. After the promotion to the Primera División , the highest Spanish soccer league, a spectator rank was set on the opposite stand. This increased the capacity to 14,500 places. Next to the stadium there is a football field with artificial turf and a tennis facility with several courts and behind the main stand there is a small training field.
In 2018 in Tarragona the XVIII. Mediterranean Games take place. The stadium is to be used as the main competition venue, with opening and closing ceremonies, and the facility is being renovated for this purpose. During the modernization work, it is mainly the rooms (changing rooms, bars and shops) that are being renovated. New rooms are to be created for medical care and doping controls. The seats in the stands will be replaced. Initially, the event should take place in summer 2017. Due to the economic situation in the country and delays in the stadium renovation, the city postponed the event to the following year.
