history

Campo de fútbol de Las Gaunas

After the CD Logroño was founded in 1922, the club played on the Campo de La Trilladora . On June 15, 1924, the Campo de fútbol de Las Gaunas was inaugurated with the game CD Logroño against the French team Vie au Grand Air du Médoc (3-0). The first goal was scored by Ramón Castroviejo ; who later became famous as a doctor of ophthalmology . In addition to soccer , swimming , tennis , basketball and athletics could also be played on the facility . The property on which the venue was built; was near a finca and belonged to the Gaona sisters. It was provided by them for construction. The Terrenos de Las Gaonas ( German  Land of the Gaonas ) became Terrenos de Las Gaunas ( German  Land of the Gaunas ). This is how the name of the stadium developed. In 1957, a back-gate grandstand was built to the south of the main grandstand. On September 18, 1962, the city of Logroño took over the stadium. In the game against FC Elche on August 30, 1969, the new floodlights were inaugurated . Between 1987 and 1988 the two rear stands and the opposite stand as well as the changing rooms were renewed. The stadium offered 14,895 seats (6,272 of which were seats). The last league game was played on February 15, 2002 against the CE l'Hospitalet . Afterwards, a residential building with a park was built on the site .

Estadio Municipal Las Gaunas

In 1997, construction began just a few hundred meters from the old stadium. The stadium, designed by Antonio Lamela , was built by the Spanish construction company Grupo ACS . For various reasons and a lack of financial means, construction dragged on until 2002. The stadium offers 16,000 covered seats for visitors on its four grandstands, which are closed up to the corners. The floodlight system is installed almost all around on the roof edge of the stadium. The opening was celebrated on February 28, 2002 in front of 16,000 visitors with the friendly game CD Logroñés against the then first division club Deportivo Alavés (2: 1). Four days later, the Segunda División B's first league game was due in the new venue for Logroñés. The game against Real Saragossa B ended with a 0: 1 for the guests.

The multi-purpose sports hall Palacio de los Deportes de La Rioja is located directly next to the stadium . The building with 4,500 seats, completed in 2003, is used by the handball club CB Ciudad de Logroño and the basketball club CB Clavijo .

International matches

So far, three international matches of the Spanish men's national soccer team have taken place in Las Gaunas . For September 2011, the Spanish football association RFEF awarded a European Championship qualifier in the stadium of Logroño. The defending champion qualified for EURO 2012 with a sovereign 6-0 win against Liechtenstein.
