history

Luxembourg have never been able to qualify for a European or World Cup. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1964 , Luxembourg just failed to make it to the semi-finals. After defeating the Netherlands, they faced Denmark in the quarter-finals. The first two games ended in a draw. Only in the third game could Denmark prevail with a 1-0 victory. In qualifying for the 2004 European Championship , the national team did not manage to win or score a single goal. Even in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , Luxembourg remained pointless despite scoring five goals. The lowest points in history were the years 1980 to 1985, in which the country's selection suffered 35 defeats in a row, and October 13, 2004. On this day, Luxembourg lost the home game against Liechtenstein 0: 4 in the 2006 World Cup qualification . In return, narrow defeats against major football nations could be celebrated like victories. For example, in 1990 the team lost 3-2 to Germany in qualifying for the European Championship, and 0-1 to the Netherlands in 2007 . The Czech Republic was defeated 1-0 in 1995 with a goal from Guy Hellers . On 13 October 2007, the team succeeded in Homel the 1: 0 win against Belarus after more than twelve years back a victory in a European Championship qualifier (updated on September 6, 1995 against Malta ). Fons Leweck scored the goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The Luxembourg national team achieved a sensation with the 2-1 victory on September 10, 2008 in the World Cup qualifier in Zurich against the highly-favored Swiss national team. On June 4, 2014, the national team succeeded in another surprise when they scored 1-1 in a friendly against Italy in Perugia .

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Luxembourg met Azerbaijan , Israel , Northern Ireland , Portugal and Russia . Luxembourg had never played against Northern Ireland before. Except for a win on October 8, 1961 against Portugal in qualifying for the 1962 World Cup , Luxembourg had not yet won a game against any of these teams. With two draws against Azerbaijan and one win and one draw against Northern Ireland, Luxembourg was able to achieve the best result in a World Cup qualification since the introduction of the three-point rule with 6 points. However, it was not enough for a place in the World Cup finals or the playoffs. In qualifying for the 2016 European Championship in France , Luxembourg met Belarus, Macedonia , Spain , Ukraine and Slovakia . With one win and one draw you could win four points and finished second to last in the table, tied with Macedonia.

In the preliminary rounds for the 2018 World Cup in Russia , Luxembourg met Bulgaria , Sweden , Belarus, the Netherlands and runner-up European champions France and won with six points (one win against Belarus and three draws, including a 0-0 away game against France) Penultimate of the group. The national soccer team climbed into the top 100 of the FIFA world rankings (84th place) and thus achieved their best world ranking to date.

In the newly founded UEFA Nations League 2018/19 , they celebrated two wins against Moldova (4: 0) and San Marino (3: 0) in Liga D - Group 2 . In the end, it was only enough to place 2nd in the group behind Belarus .

Reinhold Breu from Germany has held the position of Technical Director of the Luxembourg Football Association since 2011 and is therefore also responsible for the association's talent development program and for training coaches. Under Breu's leadership, youth training was centralized along the lines of the French model; the youth players completed their training during the week in the youth national teams and only stayed at their clubs on weekends. In addition, many young players moved to foreign clubs. Influences from the Spanish youth training and from coaches such as Antonio Conte , Diego Simeone and Pep Guardiola also flow into the training at the academy of the Luxembourg Football Association in Monnerich .

The Luxembourg U15 national team has defeated Turkey (4: 1) and Belgium (4: 2) since Breus took up his post as Technical Director (as of March 25, 2019); The Luxembourg U18 also managed to beat their neighbor from Belgium, with Breu acting as coach.

So far, the selection has been voted Luxembourg Team of the Year twelve times : 1963, 1980, continuously from 1987 to 1991, 1995, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2017.
