Mérida Unión Deportiva is a Spanish football club from the city of Mérida . The club currently plays in the Tercera División (Group XIV).
history
The club was founded in 1912 under the name Sportiva Emeritense . In 1921 , the club changed its name to Emérita after the merger of the two clubs Los Catalanes (German: the Catalans ) and MZA . In 1931/32 the club won its first regional title. After the Spanish Civil War , the club reached the Tercera División for the first time and again changed its name to Mérida Industrial in 1966 and finally to CP Mérida (Club Polideportivo Mérida) in 1985 . Between 1991 and 2000, the club experienced its most successful period, during which time the club took part twice in the Primera División ( 1995/96 , 1997/98 ) and spent seven years in the Segunda División . In 2000, CP Mérida broke up due to economic problems and the club's amateur team, renamed UD Mérida , took over the game. After the club fell into arrears with the players' salaries in the 2008/09 season, forced relegation to the 4th division (Tercera División) was ordered.
