from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

January 6th has been celebrated as Africa Day in the Catholic Church for over a hundred years . On this day, donations for Africa , especially for the formation and advancement of priests , religious and catechists , are collected worldwide .

This Africa collection was first made on January 6, 1891 at the request of Pope Leo XIII. carried out to raise funds to support the fight against slavery in Africa. It is the oldest day of an all-church mission collection of the Catholic Church. The day of the apparition of the Lord was chosen because Africa has been visibly represented in tradition in the figure of the black king since ancient times.

Every January, the International Catholic Missionary Organization in Germany calls on “Africa Day” in church services to support church training projects in Africa. Between January 1st and 15th, the Africa Day collections take place in all German dioceses. With the proceeds from the collections, missio primarily supports training and further education projects for church employees on site. For this purpose, more than 1.2 million euros were donated nationwide at Africa Day 2019.

The journalist Gundula Gause has been active as patron of the Africa Day of the Catholic mission organization missio since 2002 .
