The World Mission Sunday (Austrian World Mission Sunday) once a year worldwide in the Roman Catholic Church "celebrated feast of catholicity and universal solidarity" as. The faithful should be made aware of their “shared responsibility for the evangelization of the world”.

On June 14, 1926, Pope Pius XI. on the proposal of the Supreme Council of the Pontifical Mission Societies, a World Mission Sunday. He commissioned the Pontifical Mission Societies to organize this annually. The implementation of this day was prescribed for the whole Church and universally set on the penultimate Sunday in October. In Germany, World Mission Sunday takes place on the 4th Sunday in October.

Universal solidarity fund

The donations for World Mission Sunday, which are to be collected in all dioceses of the world church , flow into the so-called "Solidarity Fund". The national directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the individual countries inform the headquarters of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Rome about the results of the donations received. In order to ensure that the money is distributed fairly, the national directors coordinate the allocation of the funds at their annual meeting and then transfer the amounts to the individual dioceses around the world. The money is used to secure the basic financial supply of the mission dioceses so that the local churches are supported “in their commitment to the preaching of Christ among all peoples”.

history

The origin of World Mission Sunday is not only due to the concern to make mission clear as a universal church's core task, but above all to the many uncoordinated initiatives launched by orders and mission institutes that solicited funds for missionary tasks. Pope Pius XI reacted to this situation. 1922 with the motu proprio "Romanorum pontificium", which gave the missionary system a new principle of order. The “ Association for the Propagation of the Faith ” founded in Lyon by Pauline Jaricot was transformed into a papal missionary organization and placed under the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . Under the motto “We must not help this or that mission, but all missions in the world”, the “ Papal Work for the Propagation of the Faith ” founded in this way was intended to bundle the missionary activities in the hometowns and homelands of the missionaries and promote Catholic Christianity in a purposeful, universal one Unite mission aid. Through the creation of this work, which had a broad international base, church missionary work experienced a new order and strength. National interests receded, the missionaries received so much support for their work that they had to spend less time writing and sending begging letters to their benefactors and thus gained time for their missionary work.
