Enchiridion Symbolorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enchiridion Symbolorum (short for Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum ) is a handbook-like collection of - from the Roman Catholic point of view - the most important creeds and church teaching documents on questions of faith and morals. Depending on the publisher, the collection is also called Denzinger , Denzinger-Schönmetzer or Denzinger- Hünermann .

Construction and use

The first part gives the creeds of the old church from the 1st century on (DH 1–76). The second part reproduces documents of the church teaching office (from DH 101). The collection reproduces the texts in their original language, mainly Latin . The citation from Denzinger takes place with the abbreviations depending on the publisher and the serial number, which denote the texts. The dogmatic constitution Dei verbum can be found, for example, under DH 4201–4235.

editor

The first Enchiridion Symbolorum with 128 documents was published in 1854 by the Würzburg dogmatist Heinrich Denzinger (abbr. D). The sixth edition, the last that Denzinger got hold of, comprised 202 documents from the years up to 1852.

After several additional editions by different editors, a completely revised new Denzinger was presented with the 32nd edition of 1963 , the Denzinger-Schönmetzer (abbr. DS), co-named after the Jesuit Adolf Schönmetzer .

From the 37th edition, in 1991, the dogmatist Peter Hünermann took over the function of editor and added a German translation. The Denzinger-Hünermann is quoted with the abbreviation DH. Until it was published with a German translation, the work The Faith of the Church in the documents of the Doctrinal Proclamation by Josef Neuner SJ and Heinrich Roos SJ (quoted: Neuner-Roos ) was often used as a support in the German-speaking world .
