In 1944 he made his last vows . His wish to go on a mission was initially rejected, but in 1938 he was able to go to Bombay , where he was responsible for the formation of priests.

After the outbreak of the Second World War he was interned as a German citizen from 1939 to 1946 in a British camp in India , where he learned Sanskrit and studied the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita , the Upanishads and S. Radhakrishnan .

After the end of the war he received his doctorate in religious studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome with the thesis "The Sacrifice Doctrine of the Bhagavad Gita" and taught dogmatics from 1948 at the newly founded De Nobili College and at the Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth (Pontifical Atheneum) in Pune .

As a council theologian ( peritus ) of the Bishop of Pune , Andrew Alexis D'Souza , he took part in the Second Vatican Council . He was particularly involved in the commissions for mission, priestly training and non-Christian religions. He is considered to be the author of the Council Decree Nostra Aetate ("In Our Time"), which outlined the position of the Catholic Church on non-Christian religions. The decree marked a departure by the Catholic Church from its previous exclusive and anti-Jewish claim to truth.

Josef Neuner and his friar Heinrich Roos SJ became known with their scientific work The Faith of the Church in the documents of the Doctrinal Proclamation , which is called "Neuner-Roos" (abbreviated NR) and is the standard work of Catholic theological training .
