Matthias Pees (born February 16, 1970 in Georgsmarienhütte ) is a German theater critic and dramaturge . He is the director of the Mousonturm in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Pees grew up in Osnabrück. After graduating from high school Carolinum , he studied literature and philosophy at the University of Hamburg . From 1990 to 1995 he wrote theater reviews as a freelance journalist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Berliner Zeitung and the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, among others . 1995 to 2000 he was dramaturge at Frank Castorf's Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin, where he worked with Christoph Schlingensief ( Battle of Europe I-XLII Ufokrise '97 , Hotel Prora - Overnight at Chance 2000 ) and Castorf ( Dirty Hands , Demons , Hauptmanns Weber et al.) Worked together.

From 2000 to 2003 Pees was dramaturge at the Schauspielhaus Hannover under the artistic director Wilfried Schulz . In 2001 he worked on a highly acclaimed Hamlet production for Nicolas Stemann , which was also shown at the 2002 Berliner Festwochen . In 2003, Frank Castorf brought Pees to the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen (under the motto No Fear 2004 ) as the responsible program dramaturge and curator . Among other things, he accompanied Schliengensief's Wagner rally through the Ruhr area. The festival did not receive a large audience.

From 2004 to 2010 he was managing director of Produçoes Artísticas Internacionais in São Paulo, a Brazilian production office for international cultural exchange. He realized and designed numerous dance, theater and opera projects, among others with Christoph Schlingensief ( Flying Dutchman in Manaus ), Frank Castorf, Dimiter Gotscheff , Rimini Protokoll , Gob Squad , andcompany & Co. , and She She Pop . In addition, he was artistic advisor to the Wiener Festwochen for Latin America in 2005 and from 2008 to 2010. In 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 he was the curator of Latin American-oriented theater festivals at Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin.

From 2010 to 2013 Pees worked as head dramaturge for the drama division of the Wiener Festwochen under the artistic director Luc Bondy and the drama director Stefanie Carp . In 2011 he was also the dramaturge and coordinator of the productions of the Forum Festwochen series in Vienna. In May / June 2013 Pees is co-curator of “Unrest der Form. Drafts of the Political Subject - Unrest of Form. Imagining the Political Subject ”, an exhibition project that takes place on the occasion of the festival weeks in the Vienna Secession , the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and in the MuseumsQuartier .

Pees took up his position as artistic director and managing director of the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm on August 1, 2013. He is married to the Brazilian dancer Adriana Almeida Pees .
