Drew Struzan (* 1947 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American artist and illustrator who is best known for his movie posters .

Struzan grew up in poor conditions in Portland. Although he suffered from dyslexia , he was the only member of his family to successfully graduate from high school . In 1965 he began his training as an illustrator at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles , one of the leading design schools worldwide. There he met his future wife Dylan, with whom he has a son.

After graduating from college, he began working as a designer for Pacific Eye and Ear . There he designed covers for various music albums . Among other things, he created the covers for the Black Sabbath album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and for Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare .

In 1975 he started designing movie posters. At first he only designed posters for various B-movies , but his big breakthrough came in 1977 when he was allowed to design the poster for Star Wars . Through this success other film studios became aware of him and he was now commissioned to create posters more often. In total, he designed over 150 movie posters, including posters for the Indiana Jones films, the Star Wars series, the Police Academy and many others.
