Ernest Beutler (originally Ernst Beutler , born September 30, 1928 in Berlin ; † October 5, 2008 in San Diego ) was a German - American physician . He is considered a pioneer in hematology .

Life

Ernst Beutler was born in Berlin in 1928 as the second of three children to an upper-class German-Jewish family. His father Alfred David Beutler (1891–1962) was an internist and his mother Käthe Beutler (1896–1999), b. Italian, was a pediatrician at the Charité . His siblings were Friedrich ( Frederick , born 1926, later Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan) and Ruth (born 1932, later worked as a clinical psychologist, † 1993). The boy received violin lessons from a family friend, the well-known violinist Szymon Goldberg . When Ernst was seven years old, the family emigrated from National Socialist Germany to the USA in 1935. He grew up in Milwaukee . In the USA the family Americanized their first names and 'Ernst' became 'Ernest'. At first Ernest spoke almost no word of English, but developed into a very good student and came to the University of Chicago in 1943 through a sponsorship program . He also studied medicine and in 1950 at the age of 21 years doctorate . During his specialist training, Beutler also worked in the laboratory of Leon Jacobson , the discoverer of erythropoietin .

From 1953 to 1955 Beutler was active in malaria research for the US armed forces . a. also at Fort Detrick . After a brief stint at the University of Chicago medical school, he became head of the internal medicine department at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte , California in 1959 .

In 1979 he moved to the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla as head of the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine . Beutler held this position until his 80th birthday. He passed away just a few days later.

Ernest Beutler was interested in experimental and clinical hematology . In his work he used methods of biochemical genetics, some of which he developed himself. His work was noteworthy in that he was both highly original and extremely successful in his research. His main, lasting contributions concern the X-linked inactivation in humans, the erythrocyte metabolism of healthy individuals and patients with hereditary hemolytic anemia , disorders of the iron metabolism in iron deficiency and hemochromatosis , the development of screening methods for the detection of metabolic diseases ( galactosemia ), and the optimal Treatment of lipid breakdown disorders ( Gaucher's disease ). In addition to his significant scientific and clinical work, Beutler was an inspiring teacher and mentor, both critical and witty. He described himself as an iconoclast for whom the concept of dogma did not exist in science and medicine. Ernest Beutler was co-editor of the standard textbook Williams Hematology for many years .

Together with his son Earl, Beutler also developed the first professional reference management program .

Awards

Ernest Beutler received a large number of honors during his life: Appointment to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1975), the National Academy of Sciences (1976), the Association of American Physicians and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies , also the Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement of the American Society of Hematology and the E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize; and Ph.D. honoris causa, Tel Aviv University. Beutler was awarded the renowned Gairdner Prize in 1975 . The Canadian Medicine Prize is credited with the fact that its laureates often later received the Nobel Prize . Ernest Beutler's son Bruce Beutler was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine of 2011 together with Jules Hoffmann and Ralph M. Steinman 3 years after his father's death .

In front of the house at Theodor-Heuss-Platz 2 in Berlin-Charlottenburg, five stumbling blocks were laid for the Beutler family on February 10, 2016 . Bruce Beutler was present and gave a short address. In April 2016, further stumbling blocks for family members are to be laid in Berlin-Schöneberg.

Trivia

Ernest Beutler's mother, the pediatrician Kaethe Beutler, treated Magda Goebbels' son in the group practice that she and her husband maintained at Reichskanzlerplatz / Adolf-Hitler-Platz (today: Theodor-Heuss-Platz ) until she emigrated in 1935 from their first marriage, Harald Quandt .
