Life
Garfield was born in Newark in 1939 to Alice and Philip Goorwitz. There he also graduated from high school . Before becoming an actor, Garfield worked as a sports reporter and amateur boxer for the Golden Gloves . He studied acting with Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan at the Actors Studio in New York City . Before he got into television, he performed on the theater stage. He played in around 100 film and series productions, and he was particularly often cast as a sleazy or corrupt businessman or politician.
The actor has appeared in several classic New Hollywood films , including alongside Gene Hackman as one of the surveillance specialists in Francis Ford Coppola's The Dialog (1974) and as the husband and manager of a famous country singer in Robert Altman's epic film Nashville (1975) . He had a funny short appearance in Woody Allen's Bananas (1971) as a Christ-like figure looking for a parking space for her cross. In 1976 he appeared in the biography Gable and Lombard as MGM founder Louis B. Mayer . He kept commuting between larger Hollywood productions, for example as an incompetent police chief in the action comedy Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and independent films - for example with his appearances in the Wim Wenders films Der Stand der Dinge (1982) and Bis ans End of the World (1991).
Garfield also worked as an acting teacher; for example, he taught Quentin Tarantino .
After suffering a severe stroke in 2004, Garfield had to retire from acting and has since lived in the Motion Picture & Television Country House , a retirement and nursing home in Los Angeles especially for filmmakers. He died in April 2020 at the age of 80 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
