Roy Eldridge and His Little Jazz Vol. 1 is a jazz album by Roy Eldridge . It was recorded in two sessions with different line-ups on June 9 and 14, 1950 in Paris.

The album

After a tour of Europe with the Benny Goodman sextet, trumpeter Roy Eldridge stayed in Paris in the spring of 1950, where he recorded two sessions for the Vogue label in June, one in a quintet with musicians from the Goodman sextet, the saxophonist Zoot Sims , pianist Dick Hyman and drummer Ed Shaughnessy . Then there was the bassist Pierre Michelot and, on some tracks, the singer Anita Love, with whom he showed himself to be an "accomplished scat singer" in a duet, "who humorously continued the style of his former role model Louis Armstrong in the spirit of Slim Gaillard ", says Ralf Dombrowski . Another studio session followed five days later in a quartet with Gerald Wiggins , Pierre Michelot and the drummer Kenny Clarke .

Although the original record cover announced the trumpeter's music for “ jouer pour la danse ”, these were “on the contrary, sovereignly swinging, sometimes soul-pop, groovy or bluesy songs that were as entertaining as they were interpretatively demanding.” Eldridge played a repertoire of his own compositions and jazz standards the swing era such as Charlie Shavers ' Undecided , the Harry Barris / Ted Koehler number Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (And Dream Your Troubles Away) , Duke Ellingtons It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) and the George Gershwin titles The Man I Love and Someone to Watch over Me .

In the blurb of the new release of the recordings (1993), Don Waterhouse addresses Eldridge's conflict between tradition and bebop modernity in this phase of his work; but in Paris the dispute between old and new played no role, because “the audience not only preferred that Roy should be himself, they also expected it.” As a result, according to Charles Delaunay , “he is rediscovering his own personality and started a new career ”.

Rating of the album

Ralf Dombrowski included the album in his basic jazz discotheque and emphasized Eldridge's "immensely powerful and even up to the high E-flat perfectly clear tone", which is distinguished "with an almost inexhaustible melodic design competence". Dombrowski particularly emphasizes the “strong, extroverted swing” in Gershwin's The Man I Love , the “ Satchmo- toned power ballad” Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams ; On the other hand, Ain't No Flies on Me with his vocal interludes was “a party cracker.” In his opinion, the ensuing quartet recordings with Kenny Clarke showed Eldridge's competence as a link between the styles, “by playing high-note blows and the hasty melodies of the bebop school knew how to connect with the tone of the New Orleans tradition . "

In their review of the album Nuts, Richard Cook and Brian Morton (1993) praise the quality of the two June sessions of Eldridges in Paris; The highlights of the titles are Wrap Your Trouble in Dreams and Undecided . Cook / Morton (2006) particularly emphasize the interpretation of the title The Man I Love in the Zoot Sims session . On the other hand, Anita Love's singing cannot be described as epoch-making; but it would offer a pleasant contrast to Eldridge's rather lascivious vocal contributions.
