Charlie Parker's Dial Sessions 1946/1947

Russell had heard Charlie Parker play in clubs and decided to put out his records. Russell originally wanted Charlie Parker to be recorded with Lester Young , Dizzy Gillespie , Milt Jackson , Ray Brown and Stan Levey in March 1946 while he was on the West Coast . The recordings should be directed by the pianist George Handy . Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Handy, Gillespie and others were unable to attend due to club obligations; this is how the first dial recording was made with a different line-up:

  • on March 28, 1946, Yardbird Suite, Moose The Mooche, Ormithology, A Night In Tunisia and the canceled take, which appeared under the name The Famous Alto Break , were recorded.

In addition to Parker, Lucky Thompson , Dodo Marmarosa (for George Handy), Arvin Garrison (for Milt Jackson), Vic McMillan (for Ray Brown) and Roy Porter (for Stan Lewey) took part in this first dial session . Before returning to New York, Charlie Parker recorded the following sessions for Dial Records:
