Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman (* 1842 - August 4, 1922 ) was an English artist , illustrator , sculptor and scholar .

He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1860s and later headed a group of artists inspired by Edward Burne-Jones . Little is known about this group to this day.

His most famous works are The Dead Knight (1870) and The Pool of Bethesda (1877). The Dead Knight is now in a private collection, but there is a replica in the book The Last Romantics (1989). His artwork, The Pool of Bethesda, is in the Yale Center of British Art .

Bateman married the daughter of the Dean of Lichfeld in 1883 and became a wealthy owner of land and real estate.

In 2004 the Canadian author David Suzuki used some of his illustrations in his book Tree: A Life Story , German: Der Baum: Eine Biographie .
