David Suzuki (2006)

David Takayoshi Suzuki (born March 24, 1936 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian science presenter , environmental activist and professor emeritus of genetics . He achieved his greatest fame as the presenter of the science magazine The Nature of Things . He is known for criticizing governments for failing to protect the environment.

Life

Suzuki, who is of the third generation of Japanese immigrants , studied zoology and was Professor of Genetics at the University of British Columbia from 1963 to 2001 . He has hosted science magazines on radio and television since the 1970s, including the CBC 's popular magazine The Nature of Things , which he took over in 1979. From 1982 to 1987 he was a director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association ("Canadian Civil Rights Association"). Suzuki is the author of numerous books on science and the environment.

A long-time activist to prevent global warming , Suzuki co-founded the David Suzuki Foundation in 1990 , which focuses on sustainability , climate protection and renewable energies and appeals to citizens to help protect the environment and improve their quality of life with simple changes to their lifestyle. Suzuki is also one of 350 ambassadors for the climate protection organization 350.org .

Suzuki is married to Tara Elizabeth Cullis. With her he founded the David Suzuki Foundation . Their daughter is the environmental activist and author Severn Cullis-Suzuki .

Honors

Suzuki has received numerous honorary doctorates and awards, including the Companion des Order of Canada , Canada's highest honor for civilians. David Suzuki was awarded the 1986 Kalinga Prize for Popularizing Science. In 2004 he was nominated for the most important Canadian on the television show The Greatest Canadian and was voted fifth by viewers, the best ranking among the surviving candidates. In 2005 his work Tree: A Life Story was nominated for the Bill Duthie Booksellers' Choice Award , in 2007 he received the award for David Suzuki: The Autobiography . In 2009 Suzuki's life's work was honored with the Right Livelihood Award .
