Peter Garrett
Peter Robert Garrett MP (born April 16, 1953 in Sydney ) is an Australian musician and politician.
Life
After a successful career as a singer with the Australian rock band Midnight Oil , he became a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Australian House of Representatives . After his party's victory in the parliamentary elections in Australia in 2007 , Prime Minister Kevin Rudd appointed him Minister for the Environment, Cultural Heritage and the Arts. In the 2010 general election, Peter Garrett was re-elected to his Kingsford Smith constituency. Until 2013, he was Minister for School Education, Children and Youth in Julia Gillard's cabinet .
music
After studying law at the Australian National University , Garrett became the singer of the rock band Midnight Oil in 1976 , which celebrated worldwide success especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Until they broke up in 2002, the band repeatedly dealt in their songs with the foreign policy of the USA , environmental issues and the situation of the Australian natives .
politics
During his career as a musician, Garrett tried to gain a foothold in Australian politics. In 1984 he co-founded the Nuclear Disarmament Party , but failed in an attempt to gain a seat in the Australian Senate .
From 1989 to 1993 and from 1998 to 2004 he was President of the Australian Conservation Foundation , an Australian environmental protection group, and in 1993 was a member of the International Board of Greenpeace .
In 2004 he became a candidate for the constituency of Kingsford Smith in New South Wales at the instigation of then chairman of the Australian Labor Party, Mark Latham . In the general election in 2004 he was elected as a member of the Australian House of Representatives with almost 50% of the vote.
In 2006, newly elected party leader Kevin Rudd named Garrett shadow minister for climate change , the environment, cultural heritage and the arts. After the Labor Party's landslide victory in the 2007 general election , in which Garrett was confirmed with 53.14% of the vote in his constituency, he was appointed Minister for Environment, Heritage and the Arts on November 29, 2007. However, the department for climate change went to the politician Penny Wong , which observers attributed to several mistakes Garrett in the election campaign.
When the ALP National Conference in 2009 confirmed the nuclear paradigm shift in uranium mining in Australia and allowed the construction of a fourth uranium mine, the Four Mile Uranium Mine , the incumbent Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett declared that this decision was made under the dictum “set the bar to the highest level ”. Prior to the 2010 election, Garrett came under severe criticism because a national household insulation program caused a number of house fires across Australia that resulted in several deaths. After his re-election, he was no longer assigned the environmental department, but the Ministry for School Education, Children and Youth. With the inauguration of the second Rudd government on June 27, 2013 Garrett resigned from the government.
Awards
In 2000, Garrett received the Australian Humanitarian Foundation Award .
In 2003 he was named Member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to environmental protection and Australian music .
