The 2007 general election in Australia took place on November 24, 2007 after a six-week election campaign by the parties. It was the election for the 42nd Australian Parliament . From the two chambers of parliament , the House of Representatives (lower house) was fully elected and the Senate (upper house) partially re-elected. About 13.6 million Australian voters were called to vote.

The election was won in a landslide victory by the opposition led by Kevin Rudd as chairman of the Australian Social Democratic Labor Party . The previous government under John Howard had previously ruled Australia since the 1996 general election . Prime Minister John Howard lost his own Bennelong constituency , which he had held since 1974, to Labor MP Maxine McKew .
