The Family First Party was a political party in Australia . Family First operated a nationally conservative family policy.

history

The party was founded for the 2002 elections in the state of South Australia . Pastor Andrew Evans became the party's first MP when he won a seat for the House of Commons in South Australia. In 2006, Dennis Hood moved a second Family First representative into the lower house of South Australia.

In the 2004 federal elections, the party took part in elections in all states, cooperating primarily with the Liberal Party of Australia , but also with the Australian Labor Party . Party leader Steve Fielding was the only Family First politician so far to win a seat nationwide - he was elected to the Australian Senate in Victoria State. No seats could be won in the 2007 federal elections.

Although the party officially did not take a religious side, many of the party members had a conservative Christian background.

The party was dissolved on April 26, 2017 and became part of the Australian Conservatives .

Political Relations

Family First and the Australian Greens often have conflicting views, with Family First publicly viewing the Greens as being too "extreme" in their policies. This rivalry is also due to the fact that both parties are vying for the Labor Party and ideologically assess numerous political issues differently. In the 2006 Victoria State Elections, Family First repeatedly attacked and criticized the Greens in its limited advertising campaign.

Relations with Fred Nile 's Christian Democratic Party are strained as both parties vie for the same electorate, especially the Liberal Party of Australia .

Election results

South Australia 2002

The elections in South Australia were the party's first. Pastor Andrew Evans got 4.02% of the vote, which was enough to get one of the eleven seats in the lower house of South Australia.

Federal election 2004

Family First garnered 1.76% of all national votes and far exceeded expectations - even the Australian Democrats were beaten by more than 40,000 votes. This was mainly due to the good election results in Victoria, where Fielding was elected the first nationwide MP of his party.

In Tasmania , too , they narrowly failed to get a Senate seat.

State elections since 2004

In 2005 Family First got 2% of the vote in Western Australia , despite running for only five of the six seats in the House of Commons. Interestingly, the party turned down an offer from two politicians to give their seats to Family First because they had previously advocated the legalization of abortions.

In the elections in South Australia in 2006 Family First achieved a significantly improved result with 4.98% of the vote. In Dennis Hood , a second MP was elected. In rural and suburban areas, Family First received up to 10% of the vote - for the constituency of Kavel, Tom Playford even got 15.7%.

In 2006 the party got 7% of the first vote in Queensland . With up to 14.5% of the vote, the positive trend of recent months and years has continued. However, since Queensland does not have a House of Lords and the votes required to be elected are significantly higher, it was not enough for another MP.

The 2006 elections in Victoria saw a jump from 1.9% to 4.27% of the first-time voters, but again this was not enough to elect one of their candidates.

Federal elections 2007

Family First ran in the elections with the aim of expanding its electoral base nationally, but with 1.62% of the votes in the Senate and 1.99% in the House of Representatives, the results were disappointingly low and even below those of the first nationwide participation in 2004. After all, there was a slight improvement in the election result in Victoria.

politics

abortion

According to the Family First homepage, every life is considered worth living and is strictly against further medical care for abortion.

Asylum seekers

Family First claims to have a "compassionate" attitude towards refugees. The condition for this is that asylum seekers are not in prison elsewhere. However, a suitable bill has not yet been drawn up.

Drugs

Family First agrees that the drug problem in Australia can only be solved with a zero-tolerance policy and prevention.

environment

The party is committed to the preservation of the environment, as it should be preserved for future generations.

sexuality

Family First is against the promotion of a so-called rainbow family , i. H. against the right of same-sex partners to adopt children together. Furthermore, Family First is against marriage among homosexuals on the grounds that marriage is "a community between man and woman".

Aboriginal

Family First was the first party to nominate an indigenous woman as party president - lawyer Andrea Mason .

pornography

Family First is committed to a content filter on the Internet to protect children from pornographic content.

Iraq war

The party believes that the 2003 Iraq war was wrong as no diplomatic effort was made beforehand. Since Australia took part in the war, however, it is now the duty of Australians and Iraqis who are in Iraq to be protected by one's own troops.
