Penelope Ying-Yen "Penny" Wong ( Chinese  黃英賢  /  黄英贤 , Pinyin Huáng Yingxián ; born November 5, 1968 in Kota Kinabalu , Sabah , Malaysia) has been the opposition leader in the Australian Senate since 2013 . She was Australian Minister for Climate Change and Water from 2007 to 2010 and Minister for Finance and Deregulation from 2010 to 2013, and has been a Senator since 2002. She was the first openly homosexual and the first Asian-born member of the Australian government cabinet.

biography

Wong was born on November 5, 1968 in Kota Kinabalu , Sabah , Malaysia . She moved to Australia with her mother and brother at the age of eight after her Australian mother separated from her Malaysian husband. After further schooling in Australia, Wong studied art and law at the University of Adelaide . During her studies, Wong worked part-time for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU). In 1988 Wong became a member of the Australian Labor Party . In 1992, Wong graduated from the university and subsequently got a job at the CFMEU. In 2002 she entered parliament for the first time as a senator for the Australian Labor Party. Following the general election in Australia in 2007 , Wong was named Minister for Climate Change and Water Scarcity in Kevin Rudd's cabinet.

Wong is a proponent of the Kyoto Protocol and the Australian government signed the agreement on December 3, 2007.

Penny Wong became Minister of Finance and Deregulation in Julia Gillard's cabinet in September 2010. In the second cabinet of Kevin Rudd, she continued to serve as Minister of Finance and also head of government in the Senate.

Her partner gave birth to a daughter in December 2011.
