al-Āmidī

al-Āmidī , with full name Saif ad-Dīn ʿAlī ibn Abī ʿAlī ibn Muhammad at-Taghlabī al-Āmidī ( Arabic سيف الدين علي بن أبي علي بن محمد التغلبي الآمدي, DMG Saif ad-Dīn ʿAlī b. Abī ʿAlī b. Muḥammad at-Taġlabī al-Āmidī * 1156 or 1157 ; † 1233 ), was an Islamic legal scholar and theologian .

al-Amidi studied with first Hanbali teachers in amide , later became a student of Ibn Fadlan in Baghdad supporters of schafiitischen direction. He gained insight into philosophy from a Christian teacher, had to leave Baghdad because of his occupation with it and went to Syria, where he also met the mystic Suhrawardi .

After encountering hostilities there because of his philosophical interests, he moved to Egypt in 1196. There he wrote his great theological work, the Abkār al-afkār /أبكار الأفكار. Amidi also got into trouble in Egypt, so he moved back to Syria. During this time he wrote his work "Strengthening the rulers in the fundamentals of legal rules " ( Iḥkām al-ḥukkām fī uṣūl al-aḥkām ), which he dedicated to the Ayyubid ruler al-Mu'azzam . In it he developed a complex theory of communication theory of the sign value ( dalāla ) of words, which is based on al-Ghazālī .

A shorter work from this period was entitled Muntaha al-sul fi al-usul /منتهى السول في الأصول / Muntahā s-sūl fī l-uṣūl . Al-Āmidī was also hostile in Syria, which is why he spent the last months of his life as a prisoner in his own house.
