The Mindbenders (also: Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders ) was a British beat band of the 1960s .

history

Glyn Geoffrey Ellis auditioned with his band "The Jets" in 1963 in Manchester for Fontana Records . Two members of his group did not show up for the appointment, which is why he asked two musicians from other groups who also wanted to audition to help out - Eric Stewart and Ric Rothwell. Still, the group passed the test and got a recording deal after Ellis renamed itself Wayne Fontana, presumably after the label.

Her first release was the Fats Domino title Hello Josephine . Her first British chart hit was a re-recording of Um Um Um Um Um Um (originally by Major Lance ) in early 1965 , then Game Of Love became one of the fastest-rising number one hits of the year in the USA .

With their first LP Game Of Love they immediately proved that they were a capable vocal group.

Wayne Fontana left the band in October 1965 to embark on a solo career. Come On Home and Pamela Pamela were his greatest successes.

Eric Stewart took over the vocals for the Mindbenders, and their last hit listing dates from September 1967. Gradually, the group broke up. The final cast consisted of Eric Stewart , James O'Neil, Paul Hancox and Graham Gouldman .

Stewart and Gouldman continued after the final breakup of the group as Hotlegs and achieved another commercial success with the single Neanderthal Man . Then they formed the successful band 10cc .

Wayne Fontana sang for Manfred Mann on a trial basis - but Mike D'Abo was preferred to him there.

In the film Junge Dornen ( To Sir, with Love , 1967) with Sidney Poitier , the band made an appearance and contributed the tracks Off and Running and It's Getting Harder All the Time to the soundtrack.
