Pinkie Barnes

Pinkie Barnes (born April 18, 1915 in Luton , † September 14, 2012 ) was an English table tennis player . At the 1949 World Cup , she won silver in doubles and with the team.

The birth name was Lavender Rosamund Marguerite Barnes . Since the name Lavender was often shortened to lavvy , which sounded too much like a urinal because of the term lavatory, she named herself Pinkie after a movie star from the 1930s .

Career

Pinkie Barnes participated in two world championships . In 1948 she reached the quarter-finals in doubles with Mae Clouther . In 1949 she won two silver medals. With the English women's team she lost to the USA in the final. The doubles with Joan Crosby finished second after a victory in the semifinals over the Hungarians Rozsi Karpati / Erzsebet Mezei and a final defeat against the Hungarian-Scottish couple Gizella Farkas / Helen Elliot .

In June 1952 she married the actor Sam Kidd († 1982). She then ended her career as a competitive athlete and worked in the advertising industry. She had a son (* 1954).
