Sándor Glancz
Sándor Glancz (born July 14, 1908 in Budapest , † January 17, 1974 in New York City ) was a Hungarian table tennis player who won four world titles in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Career
Sándor Glancz won the Hungarian national championship in 1927 in singles and doubles with László Bellák . He became Hungarian team champion in 1928 with the Nemzeti Sport Club and in 1933 with the Duna Sport Club.
In 1928, the Glancz / Bellak doubles won the international German championships in Berlin.
From 1928 to 1934 Glancz was nominated for seven world championships . He won gold with the Hungarian team in 1928 , 1929 and 1933 . In 1933 he was also world champion in doubles with Victor Barna . He reached a final four times, namely in 1929 and 1932 in doubles with László Bellák , in 1933 in mixed with Magda Gál and in 1934 in doubles with Tibor Házi . His best individual World Cup result he achieved in 1933 when he reached the semi-finals and lost here to Victor Barna. He won two more bronze medals in doubles and three in mixed (1930 with the German Ingeborg Carnatz ).
In the ITTF world rankings , Glancz was ranked fourth in 1928.
Around 1930 Glancz lived temporarily in Berlin. In the mid-1930s, Sándor Glancz toured with Victor Barna and the Americans Jimmy McClure and Coleman Clark through American cities to play exhibition matches among themselves and against local top players. Thousands of spectators attended this "Circus Tour Exhibition". In 1937, Glancz became an American citizen.
In later years Glancz increasingly suffered from heart problems. In 1961, a heart attack forced him to stay in hospital for six weeks. In January 1971 he suffered a heart attack during a table tennis match in New York, which he did not survive.
