Robert Thum

Robert Thum (born September 25, 1908 in Vienna ; † September 1980 ) was an Austrian table tennis player . In 1928 he became world champion in doubles.

Career

In the 1920s Robert Thum belonged to the Vienna Athletic Sports Club (WAC) . From 1928 to 1951 he took part in world championships six times . At the 1928 World Cup he was world champion in doubles with Alfred Liebster ahead of Charles Bull / Fred Perry from England . In 1930 they finished second when they lost the final against the Hungarian doubles Victor Barna / Miklós Szabados . Furthermore, Thum reached the final with the Austrian men's team in 1928. Also in 1929 he won silver in the team competition, in 1932 bronze. In 1928 he was ranked 10th in the ITTF world rankings .

After the Second World War , Robert Thum made a significant contribution to the rebuilding of the structures of Austrian table tennis.

Thum was married to Eugenie Prager (* 1910 in Vienna; † 1999). He lived in Vienna at least until 1947. He died in September 1980 and was buried in the Döbling cemetery.
