Doris Gubbins

Doris Gubbins - married Evans († 1961) was a table tennis player from Wales who participated in five world championships and won two silver and one bronze medal.

Career

Doris Gubbins is from Bridgend , later she lived in Kent . In 1926/27 she won singles and doubles at the English Open with Joan Ingram , and three years later she won the singles competition.

At the 1926 World Cup in London she reached the final, which she lost to the Hungarian Mária Mednyánszky , in the singles after victories over G. Gleeson (England), Kathleen M. Berry (England) and Anastasia Flussmann (Austria) ; a bad serve by Doris Gubbins decided the game.

Two years later she was third in the individual at the World Cup in Stockholm. She defeated Lisa Akerstrom (Sweden), Ellen Stridh (Sweden) and failed in the semifinals to Erika Metzger (Germany). She won silver in doubles with the Englishwoman Brenda Sommerville . They threw Erika Metzger / Ruth Andresen (Germany / Norway) out of the competition, made it through to the semi-finals without a fight and then lost to Fanchette Flamm / Mária Mednyánszky (Austria / Hungary) in the final .

In the other World Cup participations in 1935 , 1938 and 1948 , she won no medal. In 1938 she was fourth with the team.
