Zhang Xueling
Zhang Xueling (born May 7, 1983 in Beijing ) is a Singaporean table tennis player who has performed internationally since 1999. So far (2016) she has participated in four world championships and once in the Olympic Games . She achieved her greatest successes at continental tournaments.
Career
Zhang Xueling was born in China, but competes under the flag of Singapore. At the age of 14, she moved from China to Singapore and became a Singapore citizen in 2001. Her first international appearances took place in 1999 at ITTF Pro Tour tournaments.
She won eight gold and four silver medals at Commonwealth tournaments:
- 2000 Commonwealth Championships: bronze singles, silver doubles with Sun Li Nan, gold mixed with Cai Xiaoli
- 2001 Commonwealth Championships: bronze singles, silver doubles with Tan Paey Fern , silver mixed with Cai Xiaoli
- 2004 Commonwealth Championships: silver in singles, gold in doubles with Tan Paey Fern, gold in mixed with Cai Xiaoli, gold with the team
- 2002 Commonwealth Games : Gold with the team
- 2006 Commonwealth Games: gold in singles, gold in doubles with Li Jia Wei , gold in mixed with Yang Zi , gold with the team
She was equally dominant at the Southeast Asian Championships and the Southeast Asian Games , where she won a total of eleven times and came second four times:
- 2002 Southeast Asian Championship: gold in singles, silver in mixed with Cai Xiaoli, gold with the team
- 2004 Southeast Asian Championship: bronze in singles, silver in doubles with Tan Paey Fern, gold with the team
- 2006 Southeast Asian Championship: gold in singles, gold in doubles with Tan Paey Fern, gold in mixed with Yang Zi , gold with the team
- 2003 Southeast Asian Games: silver in singles, silver in doubles with Tan Paey Fern, gold with the team
- 2005 Southeast Asian Games: gold in singles, gold in doubles with Li Jia Wei , gold in mixed with Yang Zi , gold with the team
From 2003 to 2006 she took part in four world championships , but never came close to medal ranks. In 2004 she qualified to take part in the Olympic Games . Here she reached the quarter-finals after victories over Jasna Fazlić-Reed (USA), Lee Eun-sil (South Korea) and Ai Fujinuma (Japan), where she was eliminated against the North Korean Kim Hyang-mi . In doubles with Tan Paey Fern , she won against Jasna Fazlić-Reed / Whitney Ping (USA) and Mihaela Steff / Adriana Zamfir (Romania), but then lost to South Koreans Lee Eun-sil / Suk Eun-mi .
In the 2006/07 season, Zhang Xueling played with the Dutch club TTV Fürst Heerlen in the Champions League .
In the ITTF world rankings she was 31st from July to September 2006.
In 2007, Zhang Xueling ended her career as a competitive athlete.
Private
In September 2006, Zhang Xueling married the Singaporean table tennis trainer Zheng Qi, who died in an accident in 2007.
