The women’s national basketball team of the USSR represented the USSR in international competitions and friendly matches between 1950 and 1991 . It is the most successful women's national team in Europe in basketball. At every tournament in which the Soviet women's national team has participated, with the exception of the 1990 World Cup , they came in the top three. She was two times Olympic champion, 6 times world champion, and 21 times (17 times in a row) European champion.

Successor teams to the Soviet Union

The team of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) also achieved an Olympic victory in Barcelona in 1992 when the team competed under the name United Team. This victory is not counted as a success for the USSR.

During the time of political upheaval in Eastern Europe from 1990 to 1992, the successor countries of the Soviet Union founded their own associations and appeared as sovereign states at international tournaments. Successful nations on the territory of the former USSR include:

  • Russia: Olympic bronze 2004, 2008, World Cup second in 1998, 2002, 2006; European Champion 2003, 2007, 2011
  • Ukraine: European Champion 1995
  • Lithuania: European Champion 1997
  • Belarus: European Championship third in 2009
