European basketball championship 2001 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 2001 European Basketball Championship for men. A total of 30 national teams took part in the qualification for the 8 free places.

A total of 16 teams took part in EuroBasket 2001 and qualified for the tournament in different ways:

• The Turkey qualified automatically as hosts.

• The seven best-placed national teams at the European Championships in 1999 from Italy (European champions), Spain (second), Yugoslavia (third), France (fourth), Lithuania (fifth), Russia (sixth) and Germany (seventh) were also automatically qualified.

• 8 participants were determined over three qualifying rounds.

First qualifying round (Preliminary Round)

In the first qualifying round, participants for the second and third qualifying rounds were determined in a group. Seven national teams that had failed in the second qualifying round for the 1999 European Championship took part in this round . Wales as the worst group bottom did not take part. The first two in this group went straight to the third qualifying round and the other five teams continued to play in the second qualifying round.

Second qualifying round

The second qualifying round was played in 3 groups (A to C). 16 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the five teams from the first qualifying round, the teams that had finished the second qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship on positions 5 and 6 as well as the team from Wales took part. The first two of these groups as well as the group third of the two groups of six each qualified for the next qualifying round.

Third qualifying round (Semi Final Round)

The third qualifying round was played in 4 groups (A to D). 24 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the two or eight teams that were successful in the first and second qualifying round, 14 teams took part in this round, which were directly seeded for this round. The 14 teams are the teams that finished the third qualifying round for the 1999 European Championship in the first four places in the table and were not directly qualified for the 1999 finals. The group first and second in these groups qualified for the final round.
