European basketball championship 2003 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 2003 European Men's Basketball Championship . A total of 38 national teams took part in the qualification for the 14 free places.

A total of 16 teams took part in EuroBasket 2003 and qualified for the tournament in different ways:

• Sweden automatically qualified as hosts.

• Yugoslavia was also automatically qualified as the defending champion.

• 14 participants were determined over three qualifying rounds.

First qualifying round (Preliminary Round)

In the first qualifying round, participants for the second and third qualifying rounds were determined in a group. Six national teams that failed in the second qualifying round for the 2001 European Championship took part in this round . Norway and Wales did not participate in the qualification this time. The first two in this group went straight to the third qualifying round and the other four teams continued to play in the second qualifying round.

Second qualifying round

The second qualifying round was played in 4 groups (A to D) with 4 teams each. 16 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the four teams from the first qualifying round, ten teams who had finished the second qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship in the table positions 4 to 6 (with the exception of Sweden as hosts and Belgium as the best group fourth) as well as the two newly participating teams from Malta and Azerbaijan participated. The first two of these groups each qualified for the next qualifying round.

Third qualifying round (Semi Final Round)

The third qualifying round was played in 5 groups (A to E) with 6 teams each. 30 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the two or eight teams that were successful in the first and second qualifying round, 20 teams took part in this round, which were directly seeded for this round. The 20 teams are 12 teams that finished the second qualifying round in the first three places in the qualification for the 2001 European Championship , Belgium as the best group fourth and seven teams that qualified directly for the 2001 finals (with the exception of those directly qualified Team of Yugoslavia). The group first and second in these groups qualified for the final round. The four best of the five thirds in the group also qualified for the finals.
