European basketball championship 1999 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 1999 European Men's Basketball Championship . A total of 39 national teams took part in qualifying for the 14 free places.

A total of 16 teams took part in the EuroBasket 1999 and qualified for the tournament in different ways:

• Yugoslavia was automatically qualified as defending champion.

• France was automatically selected as the host.

• 14 participants were determined over three qualifying rounds.

First qualifying round (Preliminary Round)

In the first qualifying round, participants for the second and third qualifying rounds were determined in a group. The six national teams that had finished the first qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship on positions 4 and 5 took part in this round . The first two in this group went straight to the third qualifying round and the teams in positions 3 to 5 continued to play in the second qualifying round.

Second qualifying round

The second qualifying round was played in 4 groups (A to C). 16 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the three teams from the first qualifying round, the teams that had finished the second qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship in positions 5 and 6 and who had finished the first qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship in sixth place took part in this round. The first two of these groups each qualified for the next qualifying round.

Third qualifying round (Semi Final Round)

In the third qualifying round, five groups (A to E) were played. 30 national teams took part in this round. In addition to the two or eight teams that were successful in the first and second qualifying round, 20 teams took part in this round, which were directly seeded for this round. The 20 teams are the teams that finished the second qualifying round for the 1997 European Championship in the first four places in the table or were directly qualified for the finals (Spain and Yugoslavia) minus the two teams that qualified directly for the 1999 finals from France and Yugoslavia. The group first and second in these groups qualified for the final round. The four best of the five thirds in the group also qualified for the finals.
