Ox piano

One of shallows of streams and smaller rivers from stepping stones crafted ox piano allowed men and cattle crossing. Some of these facilities have survived as architectural monuments to the present day.

Sometimes other structures are also called ox stairs because they are reminiscent of such a crossing aid; for example a flat staircase or a fish ladder .

If a bridge was missing, stepping stones were placed in series through the water at a suitable point to sinking of humans and animals in sand or silt on the river bottom to prevent. In order to counteract the slipping, hewn stone blocks were often used, the surfaces of which were slightly concave, i.e. had a slight indentation towards the center.

History and name

Ox pianos were built in modern times - for example around 1900 - when there was a lack of money to build a bridge. The name came about because the appearance of the system resembled the keyboard of a keyboard instrument .

"Ox pianos" not in water

Of the ox pianos, which are not in water and to which the vernacular has given this name only because of their similar appearance, the Fürstentreppe is probably the best known as the entrance to Trausnitz Castle in Landshut . It made it easier to reach the courtyard on horseback.
