Carlton Ettore Francesco Myers (born March 30, 1971 in London , United Kingdom ) is a retired Italian basketball player . Myers, whose father comes from the Caribbean state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and who grew up in London for the first nine years of his life, is one of the most successful Italian athletes of Afro-Caribbean descent along with long jumper Fiona May and is a prominent critic of the Italian sports fans partly widespread racism '. His election as the flag bearer for the Italian team at the 2000 Olympic Games was widely seen as a symbol against this racism.

Career

Club level

Myers began his professional career in the A2 series at Marr Rimini, where he played from 1988 to 1992. He then moved to Serie A1 for Scavolini Pesaro , where he soon became the team's top scorer . During the following year, in which he completed another season in the A2 series for Rimini, he set a still valid record in Italian professional basketball with 87 points in one game. From 1995 to 2001 Myers played for Fortitudo Bologna . During this time he won the Italian championship (2000), the final of which he reached five times with Fortitudo, and the Italian Cup (1998), and last year he reached the semifinals of the Euroleague .

Myers played for Pallacanestro Virtus Roma for the next three years . In early 2004 he became only the third player (after Antonello Riva and Oscar Schmidt ) to score more than 10,000 points in Serie A. After Myers played for Montepaschi Siena in the 2004/05 season and briefly in Spain for Fórum Valladolid , he has been under contract for Scavolini Pesaro since 2005. With this club he rose to Serie A1 in 2007 . In 2009 he returned to his Italian home club from Rimini , where he had started his professional career, and played one more season in the Italian second league LegADue .

National team

With the Italian national team Myers took part in the European Championships in 1993 , 1997 and 1999 . He was the top scorer of the Italians every time and led the team to the silver medal in 1997 and gold in 1999.

He also played at the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 Olympic Games for Italy, reaching 6th and 5th place respectively. At the Olympic tournament he was also the flag bearer of the Italian team and again the best scorer in their basketball department. Myers scored 1,825 points in 131 international matches for Italy.
