Matjaž Smodiš (born December 13, 1979 in Novo mesto , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian former basketball player. The 2.05 m tall power forward was active for CSKA Moscow from 2005 to 2011 and won the ULEB Euroleague three times in his career .

Career

Smodiš started his career at Krka Novo mesto . At the beginning he played with this club in the second Slovenian league, but rose with him in 1996 to the first division and led him in 2000 to the first Slovenian championship. This was followed by a move to Virtus Bologna , where he was able to celebrate the triple of the Italian championship, cup victory and Euroleague win in his first season . He stayed there for two more years and won the Italian Cup one more time, as well as reaching the final of the Euroleague. After financial problems and the forced relegation of Virtus, Smodiš moved to city rivals Fortitudo Bologna , with whom he was also Italian champion and reached the Euroleague final. Playing for CSKA Moscow , Smodiš took part in the Euroleague final four times and won the title in 2006 and 2008, and in 2006, 2007 and 2010 he celebrated the Russian double of the championship and the cup. In the 2006/07 Euroleague season he was also elected to the All Euroleague Second Team . In 2011, Smodiš moved to Croatia to KK Cedevita before returning to Krka Novo mesto the following year. After he won the Slovenian championship with Krka and was voted the most valuable player in the final series, Smodiš ended his career.

With the Slovenian national team , Smodiš took part in the European Championships in 1999, 2001, 2007, 2009 and 2011 and was the team's top scorer in 2007 .

At the beginning of 2008, Matjaž Smodiš was one of a group of 105 basketball players who were nominated by the Euroleague basketball and / or basketball enthusiasts to determine fifty important figures in basketball in Europe , active in the period 1958 to 2008 and subsequently in Madrid in May 2008 ( Spain ). All the nominated players played a particularly prominent role in the European Cup competitions of FIBA Europe and the Euroleague basketball and were each among the particularly prominent 'stars' of their national league teams.
