Jerry Colangelo (born November 20, 1939 in Chicago Heights , Illinois ) is an American sports manager and businessman. Colangelo was, among other things, the long-time owner of a number of professional teams from various sports leagues in the United States. These include, for example, the Phoenix Suns from the National Basketball Association (NBA), Phoenix Mercury from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) or the Arizona Diamondbacks from Major League Baseball (MLB). Colangelo is the executive director of USA Basketball and board spokesman for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . In 2004 Colangelo was himself accepted as a member of this hall of fame for his services as a manager .

life and career

Jerry Colangelo graduated from the University of Illinois and was successful there as a basketball player before he began his career in the NBA in 1966 as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls . In 1968, as the youngest team manager in league history, he took over the management of the Phoenix Suns in the year it was founded. In 1976, Colangelo received the first of four awards as NBA Manager of the Year . This makes Colangelo the record holder to this day. In 1992 Colangelo was responsible for the change of Charles Barkley from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Phoenix Suns, which led to the final participation in the NBA playoffs in the 1992/93 season .

Colangelo's son Bryan also worked as a team manager in the NBA and received awards for NBA manager of the year .

  • Induced into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995
  • In 2004 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
