Günter Burkard

Günter Burkard (born January 31, 1944 in Würzburg ) is a German Egyptologist .

Life

Günter Burkard studied from 1965 to 1972 Classical Philology , Ancient History and Medieval History , Egyptology, Greek and Latin at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1972 he was awarded the title of Magister Artium at the University of Würzburg. The master's thesis was entitled: "Problems of the text form and the interpretation of Ptahhotep's doctrine of wisdom" .

In 1975 he received his doctorate with the study "Text-critical investigations into Egyptian wisdom teachings of the Old and Middle Kingdom". From 1972 to 1977 Burkard was a research assistant at the Department of Egyptology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg. From 1973 to 1977 he worked on the project "Cataloging Oriental Manuscripts in Germany", which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

From 1977 to 1979 he was trained as a librarian in the higher library service at the Heidelberg University Library and at the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . He passed his exam in 1979, the housework was entitled: “Libraries in ancient Egypt and the problem of their identification. Considerations on methodology and the state of research ” . He then worked as a library assessor at the Heidelberg University Library until 1984 .

Burkard completed his habilitation in 1988, the two works of his habilitation thesis were entitled: “Excavation in the Asasif 1963 - 1970. Volume III. The papyrus finds. Based on preliminary work by Dino Bidoli ” and “ Late Osiris liturgies in the corpus of the Asasif papyri. Translation, commentary, formal and content analysis ” . In September 1992 he was appointed professor of Egyptology at the Philipps University in Marburg . Since 1995 Burkard has been professor of Egyptology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , in January 2009 he resigned from this position and retired; his successor was Friedhelm Hoffmann .
